A Conversation That Opens Space for Action

Today in Srebrenica, we had the pleasure of meeting with the Mayor of the Municipality of Srebrenica, Mr. Miloš Vučić, to discuss how joint action can contribute to strengthening social cohesion, improving the position of women, and creating better conditions for their empowerment.

The meeting provided an opportunity for an open discussion on how to connect local government, civil society organizations, women, and other community stakeholders in order to better recognize women’s needs and experiences, ensure that their voices are heard, and translate jointly identified priorities into concrete action.

Particular attention was given to the issue of women’s economic empowerment and what needs to be done to ensure that women in Srebrenica have real opportunities for economic independence. We discussed the barriers women face, their needs, as well as the potential and opportunities available within the local community – from access to information, knowledge, and support, to connecting women with institutions, programmes, and other resources that can help them turn their ideas, skills, and potential into concrete and sustainable economic opportunities.

Economic empowerment does not begin and end with a single training or an individual form of support. It requires us to jointly identify what women lack, which barriers need to be removed, and what support mechanisms need to be developed so that women have genuine opportunities to work, launch their own initiatives, generate income, and participate more actively in the economic and social life of their community.

The meeting was held within the framework of the project “Step Forward for a Better Tomorrow – Women and Youth for a Better Future of Srebrenica” and represents an important step towards establishing a structured dialogue between women, local institutions, civil society organizations, and other community stakeholders.

There is an opportunity ahead of us to jointly define priorities, identify opportunities, and develop solutions that will contribute to women being not only beneficiaries of various support programmes, but also active participants in the economic and social development of Srebrenica.

Because communities become stronger when people trust one another, when different voices are heard, and when dialogue turns into joint action.

We thank the Mayor of the Municipality of Srebrenica, Mr. Miloš Vučić, for his time, openness to dialogue, and constructive proposals, which provide a good foundation for continued cooperation and joint action in the interest of women and the entire local community.

This activity was implemented within the framework of the project “Bridges of Trust: Strengthening Social Cohesion and Resilience in Bosnia and Herzegovina” (SCORE), funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
